Dryer Won’t Start (No Power) in Fort Worth
If your dryer won’t start, won’t respond to the Start button, or looks completely dead, the cause is usually a power/door-safety issue, a failed start circuit component, or a control problem. Below are the most common causes, what you can safely check, and when it’s time to call a pro.

Fast checks you can do safely
These quick checks solve a surprising number of “won’t start” calls and help avoid paying for a simple fix.
Confirm it has power (electric dryers)
Make sure the dryer plug is fully seated.
Check your breaker panel: many electric dryers use a double breaker. One side can trip and the dryer may act “dead” or behave oddly. Reset it fully (OFF then ON).
Make sure the door switch is actually closing
Close the door firmly. If the door feels loose/sagging, the switch may not engage.
If the interior light stays on with the door closed (some models), that’s a clue the switch isn’t being triggered.
Select a timed dry or normal cycle, then press and hold Start for 2–3 seconds (some models require a hold).
Make sure Child Lock / Control Lock isn’t enabled.
Start cycle correctly
Lint screen and airflow warning lights
If your dryer has a lint/airflow warning, clean the lint screen and check the vent path. Some models will refuse to run under certain fault conditions.
Stop here if you smell burning, see melted plastic, or the breaker trips immediately. That’s a safety issue.
Most common reasons a dryer won’t start
Here are the failures we see most often in Fort Worth homes.
If the dryer “thinks” the door is open, it won’t start. A worn switch, broken actuator, or door alignment issue is common.
Door switch failure
Thermal fuse or safety thermostat open
Many dryers will not run if a safety fuse opens (often caused by restricted airflow/venting). The fuse is a symptom—we also check the reason it opened.
A bad start switch, timer contacts, or cycle selector can prevent the motor circuit from engaging.
Start switch or timer failure
If the motor won’t kick on or it hums then stops, the motor circuit may be failing. We test the motor circuit and related components before condemning the motor.
Motor or motor relay issue
Control board / user interface problem
If you have lights but no response (or weird flashing/error codes), the main control or UI can be involved.

FAQ
Why is my dryer completely dead?
Often it’s a tripped breaker (one side of a double breaker), a loose plug/outlet issue, or a failed safety device like a thermal fuse. If it’s repeatedly tripping the breaker, stop and schedule service.
The dryer has lights but won’t start — what does that mean?
That usually points to the door switch, control lock setting, start switch, timer/control board signal, or a safety device in the start circuit.
If a thermal fuse is blown, can you just replace it?
We can replace it, but we also check why it opened (commonly restricted venting/airflow). Otherwise it may blow again.
